Musnad Ahmad 26:508

Ibn Abi ‘Adi and Yazid narrated to us, they said: Ibn ‘Awn informed us, from ‘Amr ibn Sa‘id, from Humayd ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, who said: Ibn Mas‘ud said: I would not be held back from three things—and Ibn ‘Awn said: ‘Amr forgot one, and I forgot another, and this one remained—regarding private counsel, regarding such-and-such, and regarding such-and-such. He said: So I came to him, and Malik ibn Murarah al-Ruhawi was with him. He said: I caught the end of his speech, and he was saying: "O Messenger of Allah, I am a man who has been allotted a share of beauty, as you see, and I do not like that anyone among the people should surpass me by even two sandal straps or more. Is that not pride (al-baghy)?" He said: "That is not pride. But pride is the rejection of the truth, or the belittling of the truth, and the contempt of people."
