Musnad ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (RA)
Hadith 26:554
Waki’ and Ibn Numayr narrated to us—the meaning is the same—they said: Al-A’mash narrated to us, from Abu al-Duha, from Masruq, who said: While a man was speaking in the Great Mosque, he said: "When the Day of Resurrection comes, smoke will descend from the sky, and it will seize the hearing and sight of the hypocrites, and it will affect the believers like a cold." Masruq said: I entered upon Abdullah [ibn Mas’ud] and mentioned that to him. He had been reclining, but he sat up straight and began to speak. He said: "O people, whoever among you is asked about knowledge that he possesses, let him speak of it. If he does not have it, let him say: 'Allah knows best,' for it is part of knowledge to say about what you do not know: 'Allah knows best.' Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said to His Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: 'Say, I do not ask of you any payment for it, and I am not of the pretenders' [Sad: 86]." "When the Quraysh overcame the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and disobeyed him, he said: 'O Allah, help me against them with seven [years of famine] like the seven of Yusuf.' He said: So a year of famine seized them, in which they ate bones and carrion out of hardship, until one of them would see what was between him and the sky like the appearance of smoke due to hunger. They said: 'Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers' [Al-Dukhan: 12]." "He said: It was said to him [the Prophet]: 'If We remove it from them, they will return [to disbelief].' He prayed to his Lord, so He removed it from them, and they returned. Then Allah took retribution from them on the Day of Badr. That is the saying of the Exalted: 'So watch for the day when the sky will bring a visible smoke' [Al-Dukhan: 10] up to His saying: 'The day We will strike with the greatest assault; indeed, We will take retribution' [Al-Dukhan: 16]." Ibn Numayr said in his narration: Abdullah said: "If it were the Day of Resurrection, it would not be removed from them."
