Isma'il narrated to us, Dawud and Ibn Abi Za'idah informed us—the meaning being the same—they both said: Dawud narrated to us, from al-Sha'bi, from 'Alqamah, who said: I said to Ibn Mas'ud: "Did any of you accompany the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, on the night of the Jinn?" He said: "None of us accompanied him, but we missed him one night, so we said: 'Has he been assassinated? Has he been snatched away? What has happened to him?' We spent the worst night any people have ever spent. When it was the break of dawn—or he said: at the time of the pre-dawn—suddenly we saw him coming from the direction of Hira'. We said: 'O Messenger of Allah,' and they mentioned what they had been in. He said: 'The caller of the Jinn came to me, so I went with them and recited to them.' He said: 'So he went with us and showed us their traces and the traces of their fires.'" Al-Sha'bi said: "They asked him for provisions." Ibn Abi Za'idah said: 'Amir said: "They asked him that night for provisions, and they were from the Jinn of al-Jazirah. He said: 'Every bone upon which the name of Allah has been mentioned will fall into your hands with more meat on it than it had when it was discarded, and every piece of dung or dried excrement is fodder for your animals. So do not use them for cleaning yourselves (istinja'), for they are the provisions of your brothers among the Jinn.'"
