Musnad Ahmad 26:68

Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, Al-A'mash narrated to us, from 'Amr ibn Murrah, from Yahya ibn al-Jazzar, from the nephew of Zaynab, from Zaynab, the wife of 'Abdullah, who said: When 'Abdullah would return from an errand and reach the door, he would clear his throat and spit, disliking to surprise us with something he would dislike. She said: One day he came and cleared his throat. She said: I had an old woman with me who was performing *ruqyah* (incantation) on me for erysipelas, so I put her under the bed. He entered and sat beside me, then he saw a thread on my neck. He said: "What is this thread?" She said: I said, "A thread upon which a *ruqyah* has been performed for me." She said: So he took it and cut it, then said: "The family of 'Abdullah is free from *shirk* (polytheism). I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say: 'Indeed, *ruqa* (incantations), *tama'im* (amulets), and *tiwalah* (love charms) are *shirk*.'" She said: I said to him, "Why do you say this, when my eye was discharging, and I used to go to such-and-such a Jew who would perform *ruqyah* on it, and when he performed *ruqyah* on it, it would subside?" He said: "That was only the work of the devil; he was poking it with his hand, and when he performed *ruqyah* on it, he would desist from it. It would have been sufficient for you to say as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: 'Remove the harm, O Lord of mankind, and heal, for You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your healing, a healing that leaves behind no ailment.'"
