I read to my father: ‘Amr ibn Mujamma‘ narrated to us, Ibrahim al-Hajari narrated to us, from Abu al-Ahwas, from ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The needy person (al-miskin) is not the one who goes around [begging] and whom one or two morsels, or one or two dates, turn away.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah, then who is the needy person?” He said: “The one who does not ask people, does not find what suffices him, and is not noticed so that charity might be given to him.”
