Musnad ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (RA)

Hadith 26:762

Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, he said: Al-Mas'udi informed us, from Simak ibn Harb, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Allah, from his father, Ibn Mas'ud, who said: "While a man among those who were before you was in his kingdom, he reflected and realized that it would be cut off from him, and that what he was in had distracted him from the worship of his Lord. So he slipped away and stole out of his palace one night. He woke up in the kingdom of another, and he came to the seashore, where he would make bricks from clay, eating from what he earned and giving the surplus in charity. He remained like that until news of his affair, his worship, and his virtue reached their king. The king sent for him to come to him, but he refused to come. He sent again, and then again, but he refused to come, saying: 'What does he have to do with me, and what do I have to do with him?' The king then rode out. When the man saw him, he turned and fled. When the king saw that, he spurred his mount in pursuit of him, but he could not catch him. He called out to him: 'O servant of Allah, there is no harm upon you from me.' He stopped until he caught up to him and said to him: 'Who are you, may Allah have mercy on you?' He said: 'I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so, the possessor of such-and-such kingdom. I reflected on my affair and realized that what I was in would be cut off, and that it had distracted me from the worship of my Lord, so I left it and came here to worship my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic.' The king said: 'You are no more in need of what you have done than I am.' He then dismounted from his beast, let it go, and followed him. They both worshipped Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, together. They supplicated to Allah to cause them both to die together, and they died." Abd Allah said: "If I were in the sandy plains of Egypt, I would show you their graves with the description that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, described to us."
