Musnad Ahmad 26:77

Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, Al-A'mash narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Wahb, from Abdullah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) narrated to us, and he is the truthful, the believed: "Verily, the creation of one of you is gathered in the womb of his mother for forty days, then he becomes a clinging clot for a like period, then he becomes a chewed-like lump for a like period. Then the angel is sent to him, and he breathes the soul into him, and he is commanded with four words: his provision, his lifespan, his deeds, and whether he is wretched or happy. By Him besides whom there is no god, verily one of you performs the deeds of the people of Paradise until there is only a cubit between him and it, then the decree overtakes him, and he is sealed with the deeds of the people of the Fire, so he enters it. And verily, a man performs the deeds of the people of the Fire until there is only a cubit between him and it, then the decree overtakes him, and he is sealed with the deeds of the people of Paradise, so he enters it."
