Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Abu 'Umays 'Utbah ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Utbah ibn 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud narrated to me, from Abu Fazara, from Abu Zayd, the freed slave of 'Amr ibn Hurayth al-Makhzumi, from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, who said: While we were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in Makkah, and he was among a group of his companions, he said: "Let a man from among you stand with me, and let no man stand with me who has in his heart the weight of an atom of deceit." He said: So I stood with him, and I took a water skin, and I did not think it was anything but water. I went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, until when we were at the highest part of Makkah, I saw dark figures gathered. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, drew a line for me, then said: "Stand here until I come to you." He said: So I stood, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, went on to them. I saw them surging toward him. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, conversed with them for a long night, until he came to me at dawn. He said to me: "Have you remained standing, O Ibn Mas'ud?" He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, did you not say to me: "Stand until I come to you?" He said: Then he said to me: "Do you have any water for ablution with you?" He said: I said: Yes. So I opened the water skin, and behold, it was *nabidh* (date-infused water). He said: I said to him: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I took the water skin and I did not think it was anything but water, but behold, it is *nabidh*. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "A good date and purifying water." He said: Then he performed ablution from it. When he stood to pray, two persons from them caught up with him and said to him: O Messenger of Allah, we would like for you to lead us in our prayer. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, arranged them in a row behind him, then he prayed with us. When he finished, I said to him: Who were these, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "These were the Jinn of Nasibin. They came to dispute with me regarding matters that were between them, and they asked me for provisions, so I provided for them." He said: I said to him: And do you have anything, O Messenger of Allah, to provide them with? He said: He replied: "I have provided them with the return; whatever they find of dung, they will find it as barley, and whatever they find of bone, they will find it covered in flesh." He said: And at that, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, forbade using dung and bones for cleaning oneself after relieving oneself.
