Musnad Ahmad 26:85

Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, Al-A'mash narrated to us, from 'Amr ibn Murrah, from Abu 'Ubaydah, from 'Abdullah, who said: When the day of Badr came, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "What do you say regarding these captives?" He said: Abu Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah, they are your people and your kin. Spare them and be lenient with them, perhaps Allah will grant them repentance." He said: And 'Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah, they drove you out and called you a liar. Bring them near and strike their necks." He said: And 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah said: "O Messenger of Allah, look for a valley with much firewood, put them into it, and then set a fire upon them." He said: Al-'Abbas said: "You have severed your kinship." He said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered and did not reply to them with anything. He said: Some people said: "He will take the opinion of Abu Bakr." Others said: "He will take the opinion of 'Umar." And others said: "He will take the opinion of 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah." He said: Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out to them and said: "Indeed, Allah softens the hearts of some men therein until they are softer than milk, and indeed, Allah hardens the hearts of some men therein until they are harder than stones. And your likeness, O Abu Bakr, is like Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who said: 'Whoever follows me, then he is of me, and whoever disobeys me, then indeed You are Forgiving, Merciful.' And your likeness, O Abu Bakr, is like 'Isa, who said: 'If You punish them, then they are Your servants, and if You forgive them, then indeed You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise.' And your likeness, O 'Umar, is like Nuh, who said: 'My Lord, do not leave upon the earth any inhabitant among the disbelievers.' And your likeness, O 'Umar, is like Musa, who said: 'Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts so that they will not believe until they see the painful punishment.' You are destitute, so let not one of them escape except by a ransom or a strike of the neck." 'Abdullah said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, except Suhayl ibn Bayda', for I have heard him mention Islam." He said: He remained silent. He said: I have never seen myself on a day more fearful that stones would fall upon me from the sky than on that day, until he said: "Except Suhayl ibn Bayda'." He said: Then Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He) revealed: "It is not for a prophet to have captives until he inflicts slaughter in the land. You desire the commodities of this world, but Allah desires the Hereafter. And Allah is Exalted in Might, Wise," up to His saying: "If not for a decree from Allah that preceded, you would have been touched by what you took for a great punishment."
