Abu Sa’id narrated to us, ‘Abdullah bin Ja’far—meaning al-Makhrami—narrated to us, he said: al-Harith bin Fudayl narrated to us, from Ja’far bin ‘Abdullah bin al-Hakam, from ‘Abd al-Rahman bin al-Miswar bin Makhramah, from Abu Rafi’, he said: Ibn Mas’ud informed me that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "There has never been a prophet at all, except that he had disciples among his companions, and companions who follow his footsteps and emulate his guidance. Then, there come after that successors (who are) leaders, who say what they do not do, and do what they are not commanded to do."
