Musnad Ahmad 26:89

Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Muslim al-Hajari narrated to us, from Abu al-Ahwas, from Abdullah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The needy person (miskin) is not the one who goes around [begging], nor is he the one whom a date or two, or a morsel or two, turns away. Rather, the needy person is the one who refrains from asking, who does not ask people for anything, and who is not noticed so that charity might be given to him."
