Musnad Ahmad 26:97

Isma'il narrated to us, from Ibn 'Awn, from 'Amr ibn Sa'id, from Humayd ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, who said: Ibn Mas'ud said: I was not prevented from private conversation, nor from such and such, nor from such and such. Ibn 'Awn said: He forgot one, and I forgot one. He said: So I came to him while Malik ibn Murarah al-Rahawi was with him, and I caught the end of his speech, and he was saying: "O Messenger of Allah, a portion of beauty has been allotted to me, as you see, and I do not like that anyone among the people should excel me by two sandal straps or more. Is that not pride (al-baghy)?" He said: "No, that is not pride. But pride is the rejection—he said: or he said: the belittling—of the truth, and the contempt for people."
