Hadith 1:19

Abu al-Yaman narrated to us, he said: Shu’ayb informed us, from al-Zuhri, he said: A man from the Ansar, from the people of jurisprudence, informed me that he heard Uthman ibn Affan—may Allah have mercy on him—narrating: That men from the companions of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, passed away, grieved for him until some of them almost became delirious. Uthman said: And I was among them. While I was sitting in the shade of one of the fortresses, Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by me and greeted me, but I did not perceive that he had passed or greeted. Umar went on until he entered upon Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and said to him: "Does it not surprise you that I passed by Uthman and greeted him, but he did not return the greeting to me?" He and Abu Bakr came during the caliphate of Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, until they both greeted me. Then Abu Bakr said: "Your brother Umar came to me and mentioned that he passed by you and greeted you, but you did not return the greeting to him. So what caused you to do that?" I said: "I did not do that." Umar said: "Yes, by Allah, you did. But it is your habit, O Banu Umayya." I said: "By Allah, I did not perceive that you passed by me, nor that you greeted me." Abu Bakr said: "Uthman speaks the truth. Has some matter occupied you from that?" I said: "Yes." He said: "What is it?" Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, took the soul of His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, before we could ask him about the salvation of this matter." Abu Bakr said: "I had asked him about that." He said: So I stood up to him and said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, you are more entitled to it." Abu Bakr said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what is the salvation of this matter?' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: 'Whoever accepts from me the word which I offered to my uncle, and he rejected it from me, then it is salvation for him.'"
