Musnad Ahmad 1:3

'Amr ibn Muhammad Abu Sa'id—meaning al-'Anqazi—narrated to us, he said: Isra'il narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, who said: Abu Bakr bought a saddle from 'Azib for thirteen dirhams. Abu Bakr said to 'Azib: "Order al-Bara' to carry it to my house." He said: "No, not until you tell us how you acted when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) set out, and you were with him." Abu Bakr said: "We set out and traveled through the night, and we pressed on throughout our day and our night until it was midday, and the sun reached its zenith. I cast my gaze to see if I could see any shade to take shelter in. Suddenly, I saw a rock, so I went toward it, and there was some shade remaining. I leveled it for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and spread a fur for him, and I said: 'Lie down, O Messenger of Allah.' So he lay down. Then I went out to look: 'Do I see anyone from those pursuing us?' Suddenly, I saw a shepherd. I said: 'To whom do you belong, O boy?' He said: 'To a man from Quraysh.' He named him, and I recognized him. I said: 'Is there any milk in your sheep?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'Will you milk for me?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: So I ordered him, and he restrained one of the sheep. Then I ordered him, and he shook its udder to remove the dust. Then I ordered him, and he shook his hands to remove the dust. I had a water skin with a cloth over its mouth, and he milked a small amount of milk for me. I poured it into the cup until its bottom cooled, then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I found him having awakened, so I said: 'Drink, O Messenger of Allah.' He drank until I was satisfied. Then I said: 'Is it time to depart?' He said: So we departed, and the people were pursuing us. None of them caught up with us except Suraqah ibn Malik ibn Ju'sham on a horse of his. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, this pursuer has caught up with us.' He said: 'Do not grieve, for Allah is with us.' When he drew near to us, and there was between us and him the distance of a spear, or two, or three, I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, this pursuer has caught up with us,' and I wept. He said: 'Why do you weep?' I said: 'By Allah, I do not weep for myself, but I weep for you.' He said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed against him and said: 'O Allah, suffice us against him however You will.' The legs of his horse sank into its belly in hard ground, and he jumped off it and said: 'O Muhammad, I have known that this is your doing. Pray to Allah to save me from what I am in, and by Allah, I will divert those behind me who are pursuing you. This is my quiver, so take an arrow from it, for you will pass by my camels and sheep in such-and-such a place, so take what you need from them.' He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'I have no need of them.' He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed for him, so he was released and returned to his companions. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) continued, and I was with him, until we arrived in Medina. The people met him and went out on the road and on the rooftops. The servants and the children were running in the road saying: 'Allah is the Greatest! The Messenger of Allah has come! Muhammad has come!' He said: The people disputed as to whom he would stay with. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'I will stay tonight with Banu al-Najjar, the maternal uncles of 'Abd al-Muttalib, to honor them with that.' When morning came, he went where he was ordered." Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib said: "The first of the Emigrants to arrive to us was Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr, brother of Banu 'Abd al-Dar. Then Ibn Umm Maktum, the blind man, brother of Banu Fihr, arrived to us. Then 'Umar ibn al-Khattab arrived to us with twenty riders. We said: 'What did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) do?' He said: 'He is on my trail.' Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived, and Abu Bakr was with him." Al-Bara' said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not arrive until I had read several surahs from the Mufassal." Isra'il said: "Al-Bara' was from the Ansar, from Banu Harithah."
