Musnad Ahmad 1:67

Abdullah ibn Numayr narrated to us, he said: Ismail informed us, from Abu Bakr ibn Abi Zuhayr, he said: I was informed that Abu Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah, how can there be righteousness after this verse: 'It is not by your wishes, nor by the wishes of the People of the Scripture; whoever does evil will be recompensed for it' [An-Nisa: 123]? For every evil we have done, we will be recompensed for it?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "May Allah forgive you, O Abu Bakr. Do you not fall ill? Do you not suffer fatigue? Do you not grieve? Do you not experience hardship?" He said: "Yes." He said: "That is what you are recompensed for."
