Hadith 30:11
Hashim narrated to us, Al-Awwam ibn Hawshab informed us, from Abdullah ibn al-Sa’ib, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The prescribed prayer to the prayer that follows it is an expiation for what is between them." He said: "And Friday to Friday, and the month to the month—meaning Ramadan to Ramadan—is an expiation for what is between them." He said: Then he said after that: "Except for three"—he said: So I knew that this was due to a matter that had occurred—: "Except for associating partners with Allah, breaking the pledge, and abandoning the Sunnah." He said: "As for breaking the pledge: it is that you pledge allegiance to a man, then you turn against him and fight him with your sword. And as for abandoning the Sunnah..." He said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, as for associating partners with Allah, we have known it, but what is breaking the pledge?" He said: "It is that you pledge allegiance to a man, then you turn against him and fight him with your sword. And as for abandoning the Sunnah, it is departing from the community (al-jama'ah)."
