Musnad Ahmad 30:1119

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "A prophet from among the prophets went on a military expedition and said to his people: 'No man who has married a woman and wishes to consummate the marriage, but has not yet done so, shall follow me; nor a man who has built a structure but has not yet raised its roof; nor a man who has bought sheep or pregnant she-camels and is waiting for their offspring.' He went on the expedition and approached the village at the time of the Asr prayer, or near that time. He said to the sun: 'You are commanded, and I am commanded. O Allah, restrain it for me.' So it was restrained for him until Allah granted him victory. They gathered what they had taken as spoils, and the fire came to consume it, but it refused to eat it. He said: 'Among you is *ghulul* (theft from the spoils of war). Let a man from every tribe pledge allegiance to me.' They pledged allegiance to him, and the hand of a man became stuck to his hand. He said: 'The *ghulul* is among you; let your tribe pledge allegiance to me.' He said: 'So his tribe pledged allegiance to him.' Then the hands of two or three men became stuck to his hand. He said: 'The *ghulul* is among you; you have committed *ghulul*.' They brought out to him something like the head of a cow made of gold. He said: 'They placed it with the spoils, which were in the open field, and the fire came and consumed it.' The spoils of war were not made lawful for anyone before us; that is because Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, saw our weakness and our inability, so He made them lawful for us."
