Hadith 30:1466

Yunus ibn Muhammad narrated to us, Layth—meaning Ibn Sa’d—narrated to us, from Ja’far ibn Rabi’ah, from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Hurmuz, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), that he mentioned: "A man from the Children of Israel asked another man from the Children of Israel to lend him a thousand dinars. He said, 'Bring me witnesses so I may have them witness it.' He replied, 'Allah is sufficient as a witness.' He said, 'Bring me a guarantor.' He replied, 'Allah is sufficient as a guarantor.' He said, 'You have spoken the truth.' So he handed them over to him for a specified term. The man went out to sea and fulfilled his need. Then he sought a ship to return to him by the term he had appointed, but he could not find a ship. So he took a piece of wood, hollowed it out, and placed the thousand dinars inside it, along with a letter to its owner. Then he sealed its opening and brought it to the sea. He said, 'O Allah, You know that I borrowed a thousand dinars from so-and-so. He asked me for a guarantor, and I said, "Allah is sufficient as a guarantor," and he was satisfied with You. He asked me for a witness, and I said, "Allah is sufficient as a witness," and he was satisfied with You. I have striven to find a ship to send him what he gave me, but I could not find a ship. I entrust it to You.' Then he threw it into the sea until it sank into it, and he turned away, still looking for a ship to travel to his land. The man who had lent him the money went out looking, hoping a ship might bring him his wealth. Suddenly, he found the piece of wood that contained the money. He took it to his family as firewood. When he broke it, he found the money and the letter. Then the man who had borrowed the money arrived and brought him a thousand dinars. He said, 'By Allah, I have been striving to find a ship to bring you your wealth, but I did not find a ship before the one I arrived on.' He asked, 'Did you send me anything?' He replied, 'Did I not tell you that I did not find a ship before this one I arrived on?' He said, 'Indeed, Allah has paid on your behalf that which you sent in the piece of wood, so depart with your thousand dinars, rightly guided.'"
