Musnad Ahmad 30:1614

Abu Salamah narrated to us, Malik informed us, from Safwan ibn Sulaym, from Sa’id ibn Salamah—from the family of Ibn al-Azraq—that al-Mughirah ibn Abi Burdah—who is from the Banu ‘Abd al-Dar—informed him that he heard Abu Hurayrah saying: A man asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said: "We travel upon the sea and we carry with us a little water. If we perform ablution with it, we become thirsty. Shall we perform ablution with the water of the sea?" He said: The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Its water is purifying, and its dead [creatures] are lawful."
