Musnad Ahmad 30:1710

'Arim narrated to us, he said: Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us, he said: My father said: Nu'aym ibn Abi Hind narrated to me, from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: Abu Jahl said: "Does Muhammad smear his face with dust among you?" It was said: "Yes." He said: "By Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza"—an oath he swore by—"if I see him doing that, I will surely step on his neck, and I will surely smear his face in the dust." He said: So he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he was praying, intending to step on his neck. He said: They were not surprised by anything from him except that he was retreating on his heels and shielding himself with his hands. He said: They said to him: "What is the matter with you?" He said: "Indeed, between me and him is a trench of fire, and terrors, and wings." He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If he had drawn near to me, the angels would have snatched him limb by limb." He said: Then it was revealed—I do not know if it was in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah or something that reached him—: "Indeed, mankind transgresses, because he sees himself self-sufficient. Indeed, to your Lord is the return. Have you seen the one who forbids a servant when he prays? Have you seen if he is upon guidance, or enjoins righteousness? Have you seen if he denies and turns away?"—meaning Abu Jahl—"Does he not know that Allah sees? No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock, a lying, sinful forelock. Then let him call his associates." He said: He calls his people. "We will call the angels of punishment." He said: Meaning the angels. "No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near."
