Musnad Ahmad 30:1720

Sulayman ibn Dawud narrated to us, he said: Isma'il—meaning Ibn Ja'far—narrated to us, he said: Al-'Ala' informed me, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, that a man said to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: "My father died and left behind wealth, and he did not make a will. So, will it atone for him if I give charity on his behalf?" He said: "Yes."
