Musnad Ahmad 30:1741

Sulayman narrated to us, Ismail informed us, Amr—meaning Ibn Abi Amr—informed me, from Abu Sa’id al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, departed from the morning [prayer] one day, then he came to the women in the mosque and stood before them. He said: "O assembly of women, I have not seen any deficient in intellect and religion who take away the hearts of men of understanding more than you. And I have seen that you are the majority of the people of the Fire on the Day of Resurrection, so draw near to Allah as much as you are able." Among the women was the wife of Abdullah ibn Mas’ud. She went to Abdullah ibn Mas’ud and informed him of what she had heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and she took some of her jewelry. Ibn Mas’ud said: "Where are you going with this jewelry?" She said: "I am drawing near to Allah and His Messenger with it, so that perhaps Allah will not make me among the people of the Fire." He said: "Woe to you! Come, give it as charity to me and my children, for I am a place for it." She said: "No, by Allah, until I go with it to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him." So she went to seek permission to see the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. They said to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: "This is Zaynab seeking permission, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Which Zaynab is it?" They said: "The wife of Abdullah ibn Mas’ud." He said: "Give her permission." She entered upon the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I heard a statement from you, so I returned to Ibn Mas’ud and told him, and I took some jewelry to draw near to Allah and to you, hoping that Allah would not make me among the people of the Fire. Ibn Mas’ud said to me: 'Give it as charity to me and my children, for we are a place for it.' I said: 'Until I ask the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.'" The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Give it as charity to him and his children, for they are a place for it." Then she said: "O Messenger of Allah, what do you say regarding what I heard from you when you stood before us: 'I have not seen any deficient in intellect or religion who take away the hearts of men of understanding more than you'?" She said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is the deficiency of our religion and our intellect?" He said: "As for what I mentioned regarding the deficiency of your religion, it is the menstruation that afflicts you; one of you remains for as long as Allah wills that she remains, not praying and not fasting. That is from the deficiency of your religion. And as for what I mentioned regarding the deficiency of your intellect, it is your testimony, for the testimony of a woman is half the testimony [of a man]."
