Musnad Ahmad 30:2170

'Affan narrated to us, he said: Wuhayb narrated to us, he said: Hisham ibn 'Urwah narrated to us, from Wahb ibn Kaysan, from Muhammad ibn 'Amr ibn 'Ata', from Salamah ibn al-Azraq, that he was sitting one day in the market with 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar. A funeral procession passed by, and people were weeping over it. Ibn 'Umar criticized that and rebuked them. Salamah ibn al-Azraq said to him, "Do not say that, O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman. I bear witness regarding Abu Hurayrah that I heard him say: A woman from the daughters-in-law of Marwan died, and Marwan attended her funeral. He ordered the women who were weeping to be struck. Abu Hurayrah said to him, 'Leave them, O Abu 'Abd al-Malik, for a funeral procession passed by the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) while I was with him, and 'Umar ibn al-Khattab was with him. 'Umar rebuked the women who were weeping with the funeral procession.' The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said to him, 'Leave them, O son of al-Khattab, for the soul is afflicted, the eye is tearful, and the covenant is recent.'" He [Ibn 'Umar] said, "Did you hear it?" He [Abu Hurayrah] said, "Yes." He said, "Allah and His Messenger know best."
