Musnad Ahmad 30:227

Sufyan narrated to us, from Abu al-Zinad, from al-A'raj, from Abu Hurayrah, who attributed it to the Prophet: "If one of you cleanses himself with stones (istijmar), let him use an odd number. For indeed, Allah is Odd (Witr) and He loves the odd."
