Musnad Ahmad 30:2298

Qutaybah narrated to us, he said: Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from al-Ala’—meaning ibn Abd al-Rahman—from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "A person does not open for himself a door of begging, except that Allah opens for him a door of poverty. For a man to take his rope and head to the mountain, then gather firewood upon his back and eat from it, is better for him than to ask people, whether they give him or withhold from him."
