Musnad Ahmad 30:2309

Qutaybah narrated to us, Ya’qub bin ‘Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad—meaning al-Qari—narrated to us, from ‘Amr bin Abi ‘Amr, from al-Muttalib, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "David the Prophet had intense jealousy. When he would go out, the doors would be locked, and no one would enter upon his family until he returned." He said: "So he went out one day, and the house was locked. His wife came and looked into the house, and there was a man standing in the middle of the house. She said to those in the house, 'From where did this man enter the house while the house is locked? By Allah, you will surely be disgraced before David.' Then David came, and there was the man standing in the middle of the house. David said to him, 'Who are you?' He said, 'I am the one who does not fear kings, and from whom no barrier can prevent me.' David said, 'You are, by Allah, then the Angel of Death. Welcome to the command of Allah.' So David remained in his place where his soul was taken until he finished his affairs, and the sun rose upon him. Solomon said to the birds, 'Cast a shadow over David.' So the birds cast a shadow over him until the earth became dark for them. Solomon said to them, 'Fold your wings, one by one.'" Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) showed us how the birds did it, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) folded his hand. And on that day, the *Musarrihiyyah* (a type of bird) prevailed over them.
