Hadith 30:268

Sufyan narrated to us, Ibn Muhaysin, a sheikh from Quraysh, a Sahmi, narrated to me, who heard it from Muhammad ibn Qays ibn Makhramah, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: When the verse, "Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it" [An-Nisa: 123], was revealed, it weighed heavily upon the Muslims, and it reached them to the extent that Allah willed it to reach. They complained of that to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to them: "Draw near (to the truth) and be upright, for everything that afflicts a Muslim is an expiation, even the calamity that befalls him and the thorn that pricks him."
