Musnad Ahmad 30:2681

Yazid narrated to us, Muhammad narrated to us, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurairah, who said: Ma'iz ibn Malik al-Aslami came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery." He turned away from him. Then he came to him from his right side and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery." He turned away from him. Then he came to him from his left side and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery." He turned away from him. Then he said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery." He said that to him four times. He said: "Take him away and stone him." He said: So they took him away. When the stones touched him, he turned and ran. A man met him in whose hand was the jawbone of a camel, and he struck him with it. Then his fleeing when the stones touched him was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. He said: "Why did you not leave him?"
