Musnad Ahmad 30:2705

Hajjaj narrated to us, he said: Layth narrated to us, he said: Sa’id narrated to us, that he heard Abu Hurayrah saying: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sent cavalry toward Najd. They brought a man from Banu Hanifah, Thumamah ibn Uthal, the leader of the people of al-Yamamah, and they tied him to one of the pillars of the mosque. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, went out to him and said to him: "What do you have, O Thumamah?" He said: "I have good, O Muhammad. If you kill, you kill one who possesses blood (i.e., a man of status whose killing demands retaliation), and if you show favor, you show favor to one who is grateful, and if you desire wealth, ask and you shall be given whatever you wish of it." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, left him until the next day, then said to him: "What do you have, O Thumamah?" He said: "What I said to you: If you show favor, you show favor to one who is grateful, and if you kill, you kill one who possesses blood, and if you desire wealth, ask and you shall be given whatever you wish of it." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, left him until the day after the next, then said: "What do you have, O Thumamah?" He said: "I have what I said to you: If you show favor, you show favor to one who is grateful, and if you kill, you kill one who possesses blood, and if you desire wealth, ask and you shall be given whatever you wish of it." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Release Thumamah." So they took him to some palm trees near the mosque, and he performed ghusl (ritual bath). Then he entered the mosque and said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. O Muhammad, by Allah, there was no face on the face of the earth more hateful to me than your face, but now your face has become the most beloved of all faces to me. And by Allah, there was no religion more hateful to me than your religion, but now your religion has become the most beloved of religions to me. And by Allah, there was no land more hateful to me than your land, but now your land has become the most beloved of lands to me. Your cavalry seized me while I was intending to perform Umrah, so what do you see?" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, gave him glad tidings and commanded him to perform Umrah. When he arrived in Makkah, someone said to him: "You have apostatized (sabata)." He said: "No, but I have submitted (aslamtu) with Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. And by Allah, no grain of wheat shall come to you from al-Yamamah until the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, permits it."
