Musnad Ahmad 30:2762

Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us, Shu‘bah narrated to us, he said: I heard Muhammad ibn Ziyad narrating from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that he said: "The needy person is not the one whom a meal or two, or a morsel or two—or a date or two (Shu‘bah was uncertain about the morsel and the date)—turns away. Rather, the needy person is the one who does not have enough wealth to suffice him, and he does not beg from people persistently," or "he is too shy to beg from people persistently."
