Musnad Ahmad 30:2937

'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ziyad, who said: I heard Abu Hurayrah saying: I heard Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: "The needy person is not the one who goes around [begging], whom a date or two, or a morsel or two, turns away. Rather, the needy person is the one who does not find enough wealth to suffice him, and he does not ask people persistently."
