Musnad Ahmad 30:3400

Yazid narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Amr informed us, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Those who were before you were only destroyed by their excessive questioning and their differing from their prophets. Do not ask me about anything but that I will inform you of it." Then ‘Abdullah ibn Hudhafah said: "Who is my father, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Your father is Hudhafah ibn Qays." He returned to his mother, and she said: "Woe to you! What drove you to do what you did? For we were people of the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) and people of ugly deeds." He said to her: "I truly wanted to know who my father was, whoever he might be among the people."
