Sulayman ibn Dawud—meaning al-Tayalisi—narrated to us, Abu ‘Amir al-Khazzaz narrated to us, from Sayyar, from al-Sha‘bi, from ‘Alqama, who said: We were with ‘Aisha when Abu Hurayra entered. She said: "Are you the one who narrates that a woman was punished because of a cat of hers which she tied up, neither feeding it nor giving it water to drink?" He said: "I heard it from him"—meaning the Prophet (peace be upon him). ‘Abdullah said: "My father said likewise." She said: "Do you know what the woman was? Indeed, the woman, despite what she did, was a disbeliever. And the believer is more honorable to Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, than to be punished for a cat. So when you narrate from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), look at how you narrate."
