Hadith 30:3639

'Abd al-Malik ibn 'Amr narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Nafi' narrated to us, from al-Hasan ibn Muslim, from Tawus, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, struck a parable of the miser and the almsgiver: They are like two men wearing two coats of mail made of iron, with their hands pressed against their chests and collarbones. Whenever the almsgiver gives charity, it expands for him until it covers his fingertips and erases his tracks. Whenever the miser intends to give charity, every ring [of the mail] contracts and clings to its place. Abu Hurayrah said: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, gesturing with his fingers at his collar, and if you had seen him trying to widen it, it would not widen.
