Musnad Ahmad 30:3644

'Abd al-Malik ibn 'Amr and Surayj—the meaning being the same—said: Fulayh narrated to us, from Hilal ibn 'Ali, from 'Ata' ibn Yasar, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The likeness of the believer is like the tender stalk of a plant; from whichever direction the wind comes, it bends it. When it settles, it becomes upright. Likewise, the likeness of the believer is that he is bent by trials. And the likeness of the disbeliever is like the cedar tree, solid and upright, which Allah breaks when He wills."
