Musnad Ahmad 30:3773

Umayyah ibn Khalid and Yunus narrated to us, they said: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from ‘Ammar ibn Abi ‘Ammar, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet (peace be upon him)—Yunus said: He raised the hadith to the Prophet (peace be upon him)—he said: "The Angel of Death used to come to people openly. He came to Musa and he (Musa) struck him and gouged out his eye. He went to his Lord, the Almighty and Majestic, and said: 'O Lord, Your servant Musa has gouged out my eye, and were it not for his honor in Your sight, I would have been harsh with him'—Yunus said: 'I would have been severe with him.' He said to him: 'Go to My servant and tell him to place his hand on the hide—or the skin—of a bull; for every hair his hand covers, he shall have a year of life.' He came to him and told him. He (Musa) said: 'What after that?' He said: 'Death.' He said: 'Then now.' He said: So he smelled him with a smell, and he took his soul." Yunus said: "And Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, restored his eye to him, and he began to come to people secretly."
