Bahz and Hashim narrated to us, they said: Sulayman ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, from Thabit, he said—Hashim said: Thabit al-Bunani narrated to me—Abdullah ibn Rabah narrated to us, he said: Delegations arrived to Mu'awiyah, and I was among them, and Abu Hurayrah was there during Ramadan. Some of us began to prepare food for others. He said: Abu Hurayrah used to invite us frequently—Hashim said: He used to invite us frequently to his quarters. He said: So I said, "Shall I not prepare food and invite them to my quarters?" He said: So I ordered food to be prepared, and I met Abu Hurayrah at the time of the evening prayer (Isha). He said: I said, "O Abu Hurayrah, the invitation is with me tonight." He said, "Did you beat me to it?" Hashim said: I said, "Yes." He said: So I invited them, and they were with me. Abu Hurayrah said: "Shall I not teach you a hadith from your own hadith, O assembly of the Ansar?" He said: Then he mentioned the conquest of Makkah. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) advanced and entered Makkah. He said: He sent al-Zubayr over one of the two flanks, and he sent Khalid over the other flank, and he sent Abu Ubaydah over the infantry (al-hasr). They took the bottom of the valley, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was in his battalion. He said: "Quraysh had gathered their rabble (awbash)." He said: They said, "We will send these people forward; if they have any success, we will be with them, and if they are struck down, we will give what we were asked for." He said: Abu Hurayrah said: He looked and saw me, and said: "O Abu Hurayrah." I said: "At your service, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Call out the Ansar for me, and let no one come to me except an Ansari." So I called them out, and they came and surrounded the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Do you see the rabble of Quraysh and their followers?" Then he gestured with his hands, one over the other, saying: "Reap them like a harvest until you meet me at al-Safa." He said: Abu Hurayrah said: So we set out, and none of us wished to kill any of them except that he did so, and none of them could direct anything against us. He said: Abu Sufyan said: "O Messenger of Allah, the elite (khadra') of Quraysh have been wiped out; there is no Quraysh after today." He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever closes his door is safe, and whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe." He said: So the people closed their doors. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) approached the Corner (the Black Stone) and touched it, then he circumambulated the House. He said: In his hand was a bow, and he was holding the curved end of the bow. He said: During his circumambulation, he came upon an idol next to the House that they used to worship. He said: He began to poke it in its eye with the bow, saying: "Truth has come and falsehood has vanished." He said: Then he went to al-Safa and ascended it, where he could look at the House, and he raised his hands and began to remember Allah as much as He willed him to remember and call upon Him. He said: The Ansar were below him. He said: Some of them said to others, "As for the man, a longing for his village and compassion for his kin has overtaken him." Abu Hurayrah said: Then the revelation came, and when it came, it was not hidden from us; no one among the people would raise his gaze to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) until it was finished. Hashim said: When the revelation was finished, he raised his head and said: "O assembly of the Ansar, did you say: 'As for the man, a longing for his village and compassion for his kin has overtaken him'?" They said: "We did say that, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "What would my name be then? No, I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I migrated to Allah and to you, so the life is your life, and the death is your death." He said: So they came to him weeping and saying: "By Allah, we did not say what we said except out of devotion to Allah and His Messenger." He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah and His Messenger believe you and excuse you."
