Musnad Ahmad 30:668

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar and 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Do not practice continuous fasting (wisal)." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, you practice continuous fasting." He said: "I am not like you; I spend the night while my Lord feeds me and gives me drink." He said: So they did not desist from continuous fasting, so the Prophet (ﷺ) practiced continuous fasting with them for two days and two nights. Then they saw the new moon, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Had the new moon been delayed, I would have increased it for you," as if to rebuke them.
