Hadith 30:977

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from 'Amr ibn Abi Sufyan al-Thaqafi, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sent out a military detachment as scouts and appointed 'Asim ibn Thabit over them"—and he is the grandfather of 'Asim ibn 'Umar. They set off until, when they were at a certain place on the road between 'Usfan and Makkah, they stopped. A clan of Hudhayl, called Banu Lihyan, were told about them, so they pursued them with nearly a hundred archers. They followed their tracks until they reached a place where they had stopped, and they found date pits there that they had brought as provisions from the dates of Madinah. They said, "This is from the dates of Yathrib." They followed their tracks until they caught up with them. When 'Asim ibn Thabit and his companions sensed them, they took refuge on a high ground. The people came and surrounded them and said, "You have our covenant and pledge that if you come down to us, we will not kill a single man among you." 'Asim ibn Thabit said, "As for me, I will not descend under the protection of a disbeliever. O Allah, inform Your Messenger about us." He said: So they fought them, and they shot at them, and they killed 'Asim and seven others. Khubayb ibn 'Adi, Zayd ibn al-Dathinah, and another man remained. They gave them the covenant and pledge if they descended to them. When they had them in their power, they untied their bowstrings and bound them with them. The third man who was with them said, "This is the first act of treachery." He refused to accompany them, so they dragged him, but he refused to follow them, so they struck his neck. They took Khubayb ibn 'Adi and Zayd ibn al-Dathinah until they sold them in Makkah. The sons of al-Harith ibn 'Amir ibn Nawfal bought Khubayb, for he had killed al-Harith on the day of Badr. He remained a prisoner with them until, when they decided to kill him, he borrowed a razor from one of the daughters of al-Harith to shave himself, and she lent it to him. She said: I became heedless of a child of mine, and he crawled toward him until he reached him. She said: He took him and placed him on his thigh. When I saw him, I was terrified with a terror he recognized, while the razor was in his hand. He said, "Do you fear that I will kill him? I would not do that, if Allah wills." She used to say: I have never seen a prisoner better than Khubayb. I saw him eating a bunch of grapes, and there was no fruit in Makkah at that time, and he was shackled in iron. It was nothing but a provision that Allah had provided for him. He said: Then they took him out of the Sacred Precinct to kill him. He said, "Let me pray two rak'ahs." He prayed two rak'ahs, then said, "Were it not that you would think I am afraid of death, I would have added more." He said: He was the first to establish the two rak'ahs at the time of execution. Then he said: "O Allah, count them in number." *And I do not care, when I am killed as a Muslim, on which side my death is for the sake of Allah.* *That is for the sake of Allah, and if He wills, He will bless the joints of a torn body.* Then 'Uqbah ibn al-Harith stood up to him and killed him. Quraysh sent [men] to 'Asim to bring back a part of his body so they could recognize him, for he had killed a great man among their nobles on the day of Badr. So Allah sent upon him something like a canopy of hornets, which protected him from their messengers, and they were unable to obtain anything of him.
