Hadith 40:5
Rawh ibn ‘Ubadah narrated to us, Ibn Jurayj narrated to us, and Muhammad ibn Bakr narrated to us, Ibn Jurayj informed us, he said: ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Abi Mahdhurah informed me that ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhayriz informed him—he was an orphan under the care of Abu Mahdhurah. Rawh said: “Ibn Muhayriz,” and Ibn Bakr did not say it when he prepared him for Ash-Sham. He said: So I said to Abu Mahdhurah: “O uncle, I am going out to Ash-Sham, and I fear that I will be asked about your Adhan, so inform me.” Abu Mahdhurah said to him: “Yes, I went out with a group, and we were on some road to Hunayn. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was returning from Hunayn, and we met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on some part of the road. The caller of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called for prayer in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). We heard the voice of the caller while we were passing by, so we shouted, imitating him and mocking him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) heard the voice, so he sent for us until we stood before him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘Which of you is the one whose voice I heard rising?’ The people all pointed to me, and they spoke the truth. So he sent them all away and detained me. He said: ‘Stand and call for prayer.’ I stood, and there was nothing more hateful to me than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) or what he commanded me to do. I stood before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) dictated the Adhan to me himself. He said: ‘Say: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.’ Then he said to me: ‘Return and raise your voice.’ Then he said: ‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; Come to prayer, come to prayer; Come to success, come to success; Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; There is no god but Allah.’ Then he called me when I finished the Adhan, and he gave me a pouch containing some silver. Then he placed his hand on the forelock of Abu Mahdhurah, then he passed it over his face twice, then he passed it between his eyes, then over his liver, then the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reached the navel of Abu Mahdhurah. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘May Allah bless you.’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, command me to call the Adhan in Makkah.’ He said: ‘I have commanded you to do so.’ And everything that was in [my heart] of hatred for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) departed, and that returned as love for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So I came to ‘Attab ibn Asid, the governor of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in Makkah, and I called the Adhan with him for prayer by the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).” And those whom I met from my family who had met Abu Mahdhurah informed me of that in the same manner as ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhayriz informed me.
