Musnad Ahmad 31:122

Harun ibn Ma'ruf narrated to us, Ibn Wahb narrated to us, 'Amr ibn al-Harith narrated to me, from Bakr ibn Sawadah, that Abu al-Najib, the freed slave of 'Abdullah ibn Sa'd, narrated to him: That Abu Sa'id al-Khudri narrated to him: A man came from Najran to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, wearing a gold ring. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, turned away from him and did not ask him about anything. The man returned to his wife and told her. She said: "You must have done something; return to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace." So he returned to him, and he cast away his ring and a cloak he was wearing. When he asked for permission, he was granted it. He greeted the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he returned the greeting. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, you turned away from me when I came to you before." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "You came to me while there was a coal of fire in your hand." The man said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have come then with much coal." He had arrived with jewelry from Bahrain. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "What you have brought does not enrich us in anything, just as the stones of the Harrah do not enrich us, but it is the enjoyment of the life of this world." The man said: "So I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, excuse me before your companions, so they do not think that you are displeased with me for something.'" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stood up and excused him, and informed them that what had happened from him was only because of his gold ring.
