Musnad Ahmad 31:136

Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us, Abu Bakr narrated to us, from al-A’mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, who said: Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah, I heard such-and-such a person saying something good; he mentioned that you gave him two dinars." He [the Prophet] said: "But such-and-such a person does not say that, nor does he praise [me] for it. I have given him between ten and a hundred—or he said: to two hundred—and one of them asks me for something, so I give it to him, and he goes out carrying it under his arm, while it is nothing for them but fire." Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then why do you give it to them?" He said: "They refuse [to stop] except by asking me, and Allah refuses for me to be stingy." Uthman ibn Muhammad narrated to us—and I heard it myself from Uthman—Jarir narrated to us, from al-A’mash, from ‘Atiyyah, from Abu Sa’id, and he mentioned the like of it.
