Musnad Ahmad 31:166

Yazid narrated to us, Hammam ibn Yahya informed us, Qatadah narrated to us, from Abu al-Siddiq al-Naji, from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, who said: I will not narrate to you except what I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him; my two ears heard it and my heart retained it: "A servant killed ninety-nine souls, then repentance was presented to him, so he asked about the most knowledgeable person on earth. He was directed to a man, so he came to him and said: 'I have killed ninety-nine souls, so is there any repentance for me?' He said: 'After killing ninety-nine souls?' He drew his sword and killed him with it, completing a hundred with him. Then repentance was presented to him, so he asked about the most knowledgeable person on earth. He was directed to a man, so he came to him and said: 'I have killed a hundred souls, so is there any repentance for me?' He said: 'And who stands between you and repentance? Depart from the wicked village you are in to the righteous village, the village of such-and-such, and worship your Lord therein.' He said: So he departed for the righteous village, and his appointed time overtook him on the way. He said: The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment disputed over him. Iblis said: 'I am more entitled to him, for he never disobeyed me for an hour.' The angels of mercy said: 'He went out repentant.'" Hammam said: Humayd al-Tawil narrated to me, from Bakr ibn Abdullah al-Muzani, from Abu Rafi’, who said: "So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, sent an angel to him, and they disputed before him." Then he returned to the hadith of Qatadah, and he said: "Look at which of the two villages he was closer to, and attach him to its people." Qatadah said: Al-Hasan narrated to us, saying: "When he recognized death, he braced himself, so Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, brought the righteous village closer to him and distanced the wicked village from him, and they attached him to the people of the righteous village."
