Hadith 31:169
Yazid narrated to us, Hisham bin Abi Abdullah al-Dastawa'i informed us, from Yahya bin Abi Kathir, from Hilal bin Abi Maymunah, from Ata' bin Yasar, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) addressed us one day. He ascended the pulpit and we sat around him. He said: "Indeed, among what I fear for you after me is what Allah will open up for you of the splendor of the world and its adornment." A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, does good bring about evil?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) remained silent toward him, and we thought that revelation was descending upon him. It was said to him: "What is the matter with you? You speak to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and he does not speak to you?" Then the state of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was relieved, and he began to wipe away the sweat of revelation from himself. He said: "Where is the questioner?" It was as if he praised him. He said: "Indeed, good does not bring about evil. Verily, some of what the spring causes to grow kills or nearly kills, except for the eater of the greenery; it eats until, when its flanks are extended, it faces the sun, defecates, urinates, and then grazes again." "Indeed, wealth is sweet and green, and what an excellent companion it is for the Muslim man, for the one who gives from it to the needy, the orphan, and the wayfarer"—or as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said. "And indeed, he who takes it without its right is like one who eats but is not satisfied, and it will be a witness against him on the Day of Resurrection."
