Musnad Ahmad 31:187

Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, from Ibn Abi 'Arubah, Qatadah narrated to us, from whoever met the delegation—and he mentioned Abu Nadrah—from Abu Sa'id, that when the delegation of 'Abd al-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), they said: "We are a tribe from Rabi'ah, and between us and you are the disbelievers of Mudar, and we are unable to come to you except during the sacred months. So command us with a matter that, if we adhere to it, we will enter Paradise, and we will command those behind us with it, or we will invite them to it." He said: "I command you with four, and I forbid you from four: Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him—and this is not from the four—establish the prayer, give the zakat, fast Ramadan, and give the fifth of the spoils. And I forbid you from four: the *duba* (gourd), the *naqir* (hollowed-out log), the *hantam* (green glazed jar), and the *muzaffat* (pitch-coated vessel)." They said: "What is your knowledge of the *naqir*?" He said: "A trunk that is hollowed out, then they throw into it *qati'a* (pieces of dates) or dates and water, until when its fermentation settles, you drink it, to the point that one of you might strike his cousin with a sword." Among the people was a man who had received a wound from that, and I began to hide it out of shyness from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). They said: "What do you command us to drink in?" He said: "In skins whose mouths are tied." They said: "Our land is a land with many rats; leather skins do not last in it." He said: "Even if the rats eat them," [repeating it] twice or three times. And he said to Ashajj 'Abd al-Qays: "Indeed, you possess two qualities that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, loves: forbearance and deliberation."
