Musnad Ahmad 31:24

Muhammad ibn Fudayl narrated to us, 'Amarah ibn al-Qa'qa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Nu'm, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: 'Ali sent from Yemen to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) a gold nugget in a tanned leather pouch, which had not been cleared of its dust. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) divided it among four: Zayd al-Khayr, al-Aqra' ibn Habis, 'Uyaynah ibn Hisn, and 'Alqamah ibn 'Ulathah—or 'Amir ibn al-Tufayl (the doubt is 'Amarah's). Some of his companions, the Ansar and others, felt aggrieved by that. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Will you not trust me, while I am the trustee of the One who is in the heaven? News comes to me from the heaven morning and evening." Then a man came to him with sunken eyes, prominent cheekbones, a protruding forehead, a thick beard, a tucked-up waist-wrapper, and a shaved head. He said: "Fear Allah, O Messenger of Allah!" He (the Prophet) raised his head toward him and said: "Woe to you! Am I not the most entitled of the people of the earth to fear Allah?" Then he turned away. Khalid said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I strike his neck?" The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Perhaps he prays." He (Khalid) said: "How many a person who prays says with his tongue what is not in his heart!" The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "I have not been commanded to probe the hearts of the people, nor to split open their bellies." Then the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) looked at him as he was turning away and said: "Indeed, there will emerge from the progeny of this man a people who recite the Quran, but it will not pass beyond their throats; they will pass through the religion just as an arrow passes through the game."
