Musnad Ahmad 31:411

Muhammad ibn Ja‘far and Hajjaj narrated to us, they said: Shu‘bah narrated to us, he said: I heard Abu Hamzah narrating from Hilal ibn Hisn, who said: I stayed with Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, and the gathering brought us together. He said: He narrated that he woke up one day having tied a stone to his stomach out of hunger. His wife—or his mother—said to him: "Go to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and ask him, ask him. For so-and-so came to him and asked him, and he gave him; and so-and-so came to him and asked him, and he gave him." He said: I said, "I will go until I seek something." He said: So I sought, and I came to him—Hajjaj said: "I did not find anything, so I came to him"—while he was delivering a sermon. I caught part of his speech as he was saying: "Whoever seeks chastity, Allah will make him chaste; and whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient; and whoever asks us, we either give him or we console him"—Abu Hamzah is the one who expressed doubt—"and whoever seeks chastity from us or seeks self-sufficiency is more beloved to us than the one who asks us." He said: So I returned, and I did not ask him for anything. Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, continued to provide for us until I do not know of any household among the Ansar with more wealth than us.
