مسند أبي سعيد الخدري رضي الله عنه

Hadith 31:637

Yunus narrated to us, Fulayh narrated to us, from Sa’id ibn ‘Ubayd ibn al-Sabbaq, from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived, we used to notify him of whoever among our dead was present, so he would come to him before he died. He would be present with him, seek forgiveness for him, and wait for his death. He said: Sometimes that would detain him for a long time, which would be difficult for him. He said: So we said, "It is kinder to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that we do not notify him of the dying person until he dies." He said: So when a person among us died, we would notify him of it, and he would come to his family, seek forgiveness for him, and pray over him. Then, if it seemed appropriate to him to witness the burial, he would wait to witness it, and if it seemed appropriate to him to leave, he would leave. He said: We continued in that manner for another period. He said: Then we said, "It is kinder to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that we carry our dead to his house, so that we do not make him travel and do not trouble him." He said: So we did that, and the matter was thus.
