Yazid narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Amr informed us, from ‘Umar ibn al-Hakam ibn Thawban, that Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent ‘Alqamah ibn Mujazziz on a military expedition in which I was included. When we reached the end of our campaign, or were on some part of the road, he gave permission to a group of the army [to return], and he appointed ‘Abdullah ibn Hudhafah ibn Qays al-Sahmi over them, and he was one of the companions of Badr, and he had a playful nature—meaning joking. I was among those who returned with him. We stopped at some point on the road. He said: The people lit a fire to prepare some food for themselves, or to warm themselves. He said: So he said to them, "Do I not have the right of hearing and obedience over you?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Will you not do anything I command you to do?" They said, "Yes." He said, "I adjure you by my right and my obedience to me, that you leap into this fire." Some people stood up and tightened their garments, and when he thought they were about to leap, he said, "Restrain yourselves, for I was only joking with you." They mentioned that to the Prophet (ﷺ) after they arrived. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever among them commands you to commit an act of disobedience, do not obey him."
