Musnad Ahmad 31:673

Hassan ibn Musa narrated to us, Shaiban narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Uqbah ibn Abd al-Ghafir, from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "A man from among those who passed away before you was granted wealth and children by Allah. When death approached him, he called his sons and said: 'What kind of father was I to you?' They said: 'The best of fathers.' He said: 'By Allah, I have never stored up any good with Allah at all. So when I die, burn me, until when I become charcoal, crush me, then scatter me on a day'—meaning a stormy wind." He said: And the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "He took their oaths to that, by my Lord, and they did it, by my Lord. When he died, they burned him, until when he became charcoal, they crushed him, then scattered him on a stormy day. His Lord said: 'Be.' And suddenly he was a man standing. His Lord said to him: 'What compelled you to do what you did?' He said: 'O Lord, I feared Your punishment.' He said: 'By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, nothing saved him except that, so Allah forgave him.'" Hassan said once: "Nothing met him except that, so Allah forgave him." Qatadah said: "A man who feared the punishment of Allah, so Allah saved him through his fear."
